Natural Mosquito Repellents

GARLIC: Eat plenty--mosquitos hate it ... not just from the odor on your breath but also from the sulfur compounds that you emit through your skin.

WEAR LIGHT CLOTHES: Mosquitos are attracted to darker colors, as they manage to see them more easily.

TEA TREE OIL: (This is on my list to try in 2023 ... I'll post the results.)

The tea-tree oil works great!!

So much so that, now, I use it in my DIY soap, and I no longer spray it on.

I also use tea-tree oil in my hair. It helps keep gnats, ticks, and mosquitoes away when I'm working in my gardens.

Tea tree oil is a great natural insect repellent.

Make a homemade spray by mixing

2 oz of organic tea tree oil, and

some water into a spray bottle.

Mist the solution onto the skin and rub in.

Clear spray bottle on a light wooden surface labeled lavender mosquito spray, against a plain white wall.

LAVENDER OIL: Lavender essential oil not only smells great but is also an effective mosquito repellent. Dilute in distilled water.

LEMONGRASS AND CITRONELLA: Lemongrass (Cymbopogon) is a tropical variety of grass with a sweet, lemony scent widely used in cooking. Plant it in your garden or keep it in a large planter pot to keep not only mosquito’s but also other bugs away from your home.

Citronella oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves and stems of different species of lemongrass. It is widely found in candles, incense, and oils for burners and has been proven to be extremely effective in repelling mosquitos.

Again, it can be made into a body spray and found in natural stores.

Citronella candles, which people have long used on patios and when camping, aren't as effective as skin applications. Candles, which offer continuous evaporation of the oil, have been shown to reduce mosquitos by just 50%.

OIL OF LEMON EUCALYPTUS

Oil of lemon eucalyptus has been found to be the most effective natural mosquito repellent. A 2016 study found that the efficacy of this particular oil falls third in line, behind DEET and picaridin. It is the only natural repellent that is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for effectiveness and human safety.

Note: Oil of lemon eucalyptus and lemon eucalyptus oil are not the same thing. They come from different plants, and lemon eucalyptus oil has far less of the ingredient that repels mosquitoes, which is called PMD. Make sure any product you use as a repellent contains oil of lemon eucalyptus.
