Signs your garden plants need nutrients

Updated: 5 days ago

Home Gardening Basics

Nutrient problems often show in home gardens as color changes, weak growth, or poor fruiting. The location and color of the symptom matter.

Pale green or yellow older leaves

Purple or reddish tones on leaves

Weak stems and slow growth

Lots of leaves but few flowers

Poor fruit size or poor fruit set

Yellowing between leaf veins

An Infographic titled Your Garden Talks to You shows a hand checking leafy plants and a table of nutrient deficiency signs and fixes.

Nitrogen shortage often appears as general yellowing, especially on older leaves. This is common in heavy-feeding crops such as corn, tomatoes, squash, and cabbage. These plants grow fast and need steady nutrition.

But more fertilizer is not always the answer. Too much nitrogen can create lush, leafy tomato plants with few tomatoes. It can also make herbs like basil soft and less flavorful.

Phosphorus problems can show as purplish leaves, especially in young plants during cool spring weather. The soil may contain phosphorus, but cold roots may not absorb it well. Once soil warms, the plant may improve on its own.

Potassium supports flowering, fruiting, and overall plant strength. Low potassium may show as yellowing or browning along older leaf edges. Fruiting plants such as tomatoes, peppers, melons, and strawberries use potassium heavily as they begin to produce.

  • Tomatoes

Need consistent feeding, but not too much nitrogen once flowering starts.

  • Corn

Feeds heavily and often shows nitrogen stress as pale lower leaves.

  • Strawberries

Prefer steady, moderate nutrition. Too much fertilizer can boost leaves at the expense of fruit.

  • Blueberries

Need acidic soil. If leaves yellow while veins stay greener, the plant may be struggling to take up iron because the soil pH is too high.

If several plants in the same bed show similar symptoms, the soil may need compost, balanced fertilizer, or a soil test. A home soil test through a local extension service can help you avoid guessing.
