Can You Imagine Heaven?

Updated: 22 hours ago

(Short Story)

Heaven is grander than any eye has seen and more magnificent than our minds can conceive. It is like a three-year-old trying to understand what her parent does every day at work.

One day, little Chrissy tried to figure out what her mommy did when she went to “work”—whatever that was. Chrissy knew Mommy dropped her off at daycare and came back a long time later. But what did Mommy do while she was gone?

Chrissy knew a few of the places Mommy went. There was home; that’s where they lived, ate, and slept. Chrissy knew that place well. Then there was “the store.” They went to stores often to buy food, clothes, toys, and other things to bring home, but work was different from the store. Mommy never brought anything home from work. Well... except sometimes she brought “work” home. But that only meant papers.

There were other places too—the doctor’s office, the ice cream store, the movies, restaurants, and the gas station. Mommy took Chrissy to those places every now and then, but she never stayed at any of them as long as she stayed at work.

Then Chrissy thought about the park. Yeah... when Mommy took her to the park, they could be there a looooong time—especially the one with the lake. Usually they even packed lunch and ate there. Yeah, Mommy took lunch to work too. And if they walked the path around the lake, they were always tired when they got home. Yep. Mommy was always tired when she came home from work. Then Chrissy remembered hearing Mommy complain that the “PARKing” downtown was terrible. Now Chrissy was certain; Mommy went to a park when she went to work!

It had to be a park for adults because, otherwise, Mommy would take her along. Mommy also talked about “her desk.” Chrissy had drawn pictures that Mommy proudly placed on it. Chrissy wondered if Mommy’s desk was near the lake, like the picnic tables.

And Mommy had a “boss” at work. He told Mommy what she had to do. Mommy was also on a “team,” and her team had to finish their work on time. Chrissy wondered if they wore uniforms like her brother’s baseball team. That night, Chrissy overheard Mommy telling Daddy that her TEAM had “won a new contract.” Chrissy looked puzzled.

Then she asked, “What was the score?”

Like a three-year-old trying to understand what her parent does every day at work, we can only begin to imagine Heaven. It is grander than any eye has seen and more magnificent than our minds can conceive.

Matthew 18:4

Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
