The Gut-Joint Connection
The more I learn, the more fascinating this connection becomes. The gut isn't just a food-processing tube. It's one of the body's great meeting places between what we consume, the microorganisms living inside us, and the immune system protecting us. When that relationship is disturbed, the effects may reach farther than the digestive tract. So when I reflect on my reaction to nightshades, I no longer look only at the tomato sitting on my plate; I consider what happens after I eat it. What does it interact with? How does my body respond? What happens in my digestive system?

There are some opinions I've learned to consider when discussing food and inflammation, and this is where lectins become interesting. Lectins are naturally occurring proteins found in many plants. They have the ability to attach themselves to carbohydrates on the surface of cells. Some lectins can survive digestion and interact directly with the lining of the digestive tract. Tomato lectin, for example, has been shown to resist digestion and attach to intestinal villi. And this is where the story gets a little more complicated.
Think of Your Intestine as a Security Fence
The lining of the small intestine isn't simply a wall; it's more like a very sophisticated security fence. The cells lining the intestine sit closely together, with structures called tight junctions connecting them. These junctions help control what is allowed to pass from the digestive tract into the body. The nutrients we need can get through, but things that shouldn't enter the bloodstream are supposed to stay on the other side. Those little junctions are not permanently locked; they can open and close.
So Where Do Lectins Come In?
This is the part that interests me. Some research has proposed that certain dietary lectins can interact with intestinal cells and influence the intestinal barrier. Some lectins have been shown to affect the function of intestinal cells and their protective mechanisms.
There is also research connecting dietary lectins with intestinal permeability and immune activation, including a proposed connection with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. But I want to be careful here: this is a proposed pathway, not a proven explanation for every person's arthritis pain. The research is still developing.
What Happens When the Gut Becomes Too Permeable?
Our intestines contain trillions of bacteria. Most of them belong there. In fact, our relationship with our gut microbiome is incredibly important to our health. The problem isn't simply “bacteria in the gut.” The problem is what happens when things that are supposed to remain inside the intestinal environment begin crossing that barrier.
When the gut barrier is compromised, bacterial fragments and other substances can gain greater access to the immune system. One of the substances scientists pay close attention to is lipopolysaccharide, or LPS, a component of the outer membrane of certain bacteria.
Think of LPS as a tiny piece of bacterial debris. When the immune system encounters too much of it in the wrong place, it can sound an alarm. That alarm can lead to the release of inflammatory signals.
And inflammation doesn't necessarily stay confined to the gut. Researchers have been investigating the relationship between increased intestinal permeability, immune activation, and inflammatory diseases affecting other parts of the body—including the joints.
And That's Where My Tomatoes Come Back Into the Story
This is why my personal experience with tomatoes has made me curious. I don't believe that tomatoes are “bad.” I don't believe everyone with arthritis needs to eliminate tomatoes.
And I certainly don't believe that lectins are the answer to every inflammatory problem.
But I do believe there is value in understanding the conversation taking place between food, the gut, the immune system, and inflammation.
When I repeatedly eat something and notice that my joints seem to respond with more pain, I pay attention. Maybe the explanation isn't as simple as “tomatoes cause inflammation.” Maybe, for some people, the conversation begins much earlier—in the gut.
